Workshop-Chicago Alcohol Data

The above chart lists the different weapons used in Alcohol related deaths in Chicago. The primary category described in the raw data is “other gun,” which while vague, does inform forensic capabilities of the time being charted, and also reveals how much more likely death from a bullet wound was than any other weapon such as a knife or a beating.

The second chart tracks the total number of alcohol related deaths in Chicago from 1875 to 1930. Whether the increase in deaths scales proportionally with increases in the total population of Chicago, or the increases are due to a lack of regulation in bootlegged alcohol is uncertain from just this data alone, and would need corroboration from further data.

Raw data pulled from the Historical Homicide Project, by Northwestern University.
